We have an injured bird...

Poor little guy (or girl) was sleeping on a tree branch by our bird feeder. Benjamin called me to take a picture but I couldn't find my camera. We were so close to the bird and I was able to reach out and hold it. It didn't move but sat still in my hands. I laid it on the ground and it hopped a bit and tried to fly.

Found my camera and snapped a few pics.

I picked it up again when I realized that its wing was hurt. It nipped at my hand a bit and chirped a bit.

When I put it down again, it hopped/flew to the road and stopped in the middle of the road and tucked its head under its wing again. Well, we couldn't let it sleep in the road, so I picked it up and put it on the grass under our tree - near the bird feeder. It promptly tucked its head under its wing again and went to sleep.

After about an hour, it was still sleeping under the tree. I realized that if it stayed there all night, it would probably be cold and would not survive. Jessica and I fashioned a "cage" out of a milk crate. We put some grass/weeds in there and also put in a twig. Jessica shelled a few sunflower seeds and put them in a dish for the bird. I picked the bird up and put it in the cage, and moved it into the laundry room. It's sleeping now. Hopefully the little thing will survive until morning. We are hoping its wing is merely sprained and not broken. A night of rest should do the trick!
